What Kind of Fabric Do You Need?

Here’s a quick guide to the most common types of bunad fabric:

Wool Twill (Toskaft ullstoff)

A durable, solid-colored wool fabric woven in plain weave – the most commonly used structure in bunad making. Ideal for bodices, skirts, and capes in women’s bunads. Available in a wide range of traditional colors. A timeless, versatile choice.

Heavy Felted Wool (Vadmel)

Vadmel is a thick, tightly woven wool fabric that’s felted for durability, wind resistance, and natural water repellency.

Used especially in men’s bunads for trousers, jackets, and outerwear. This historic Norwegian fabric was once common in work and outdoor clothing – now valued for its strength and warmth.

Brocade

Brocade is a richly decorative fabric with woven patterns, often with sheen or metallic accents. Traditionally used for bodices or vests, it gives a luxurious look to your bunad.

Historically woven with gold or silver thread, modern brocade achieves a similar effect using glossy threads in detailed patterns.

Damask

Damask is a monochrome woven fabric with subtle patterns that emerge through a play of matte and shiny surfaces.

Elegant and classic, it’s often used for bodices, aprons, and bags. The design appears through satin weave contrasts, especially when woven in glossy yarns like linen or mercerized cotton.

Linen and cotton

These fabrics are used in various parts of the bunad:

  • Fine white linen – perfect for shirts
  • Coarse linen – used as lining for bodices and skirts
  • Cotton – suitable for linings and lighter summer bunads or everyday versions

We offer several fabric weights and qualities to match your needs.

Apron Fabric

Aprons are an important part of the bunad and come in many materials and styles:
    •    Woven wool
    •    Printed wool
    •    Cotton
    •    Damask

We’re happy to help you choose a fabric that suits your bunad and personal style.
