The Gammel Alvdalsbunad is a bodice dress (livkjole) made from patterned wool fabric, based on local textile traditions from the mid-1800s. The grapevine and vine leaf pattern originates from Skjørberg Printworks in Trondheim and is preserved at the Trøndelag Folk Museum. The bunad came into use in the early 20th century and is available in green, rust-red, or deep blue. It can be styled with various aprons and shirts—from colorful patterned blouses to fine, crisp white linen shirts. At Hulda Bunader, you’ll find kits, exclusive fabrics, and everything you need to sew your own Gammel Alvdalsbunad.
Printed wool fabrics became common in Østerdalen around 1850, with textiles dyed and printed both locally and in cities like Trondheim and Røros. Several patterns were used between approximately 1850 and 1940. The pattern used for the Gammel Alvdalsbunad is from the Skjørberg Printworks in Trondheim. The original block print is preserved today at the Trøndelag Folk Museum in Sverresborg, and it has been carefully reconstructed to bring this historical bunad back to life.
This bunad was introduced as a regional festive costume in the early 1900s. It is a wool bodice dress printed with elegant grapevines and vine leaves—motifs that were likely used across the broader Østerdal region. The bunad is available in green, rust-red, or a deep petrol blue.
The Gammel Alvdalsbunad offers a range of styling options when it comes to shirts and aprons. Historical sources show that, in the early 20th century, people often wore patterned or colored shirts for everyday use. However, for formal occasions, a bright white linen shirt was considered the most refined choice.
A silk shawl is optional for the Gammel Alvdalsbunad. You are free to choose the colors and patterns that suit you best. The shawl may be finished with or without fringe.
This bunad traditionally features a heart-shaped brooch at the collar, often referred to as a Maria brooch or crown brooch. There are no strict rules for which silver to use, but the silver used with the Østerdal bunad also fits this style well. A silver belt is not used with this bunad.
The complete Gammel Alvdalsbunad, fully sewn, is NOK 22,000.*
Additional charges may apply for waist sizes over 110 cm. Shirt, silver, and accessories are sold separately.
