Men’s bunad from Østerdalen

The men’s bunad from Østerdalen is an authentic reconstruction of garments worn in the Østerdal region during the 1800s. It consists of knee breeches and a short jacket (trøye) in black broadcloth, a wool waistcoat printed in rust red, green, or blue, and a shirt in cotton or embroidered linen. At Hulda Bunader, you’ll find fabric kits, high-quality materials, and accessories to sew your own Østerdal bunad.

The Østerdal bunad consists of knee breeches, shirt, waistcoat, and short jacket (trøye). The breeches and jacket are made from black wool broadcloth. The waistcoat is made of printed wool fabric, with the back panel in either linen canvas (baskerlin) or broadcloth. Several types of shirts can be worn with the bunad, ranging from a simple, machine-made cotton shirt to various linen shirts with hand embroidery.

The different garments in the bunad are reconstructed from clothing worn in the Østerdal region around 1830. The breeches are based on an original pair of broadcloth trousers from Fåset in Tynset. The waistcoat is copied from a historical piece from Os in Østerdalen – the original is rust red with black print. In later years, the fabric has also been made in green and blue due to public demand. The jacket (trøye) is an exact replica of an old garment from Tynset Rural Museum.

The bunad features specially made brass buttons and knee buckles. For headwear, you can choose either a traditional shield cap or a knitted cap. Accessories include a silver brooch or neck button, handwoven leg ties, wool stockings, and suspenders. The outfit may also be decorated with a silk scarf (bunad scarf) and a knife.
