Originally developed between 1946 and 1948, the Signe Storstrøm bunad later became known as the Alvdal bunad. Its floral embroidery is inspired by a church door from Alvdal’s old church, featuring stitched flowers on the skirt and pocket, along with a narrow red trim along the bodice. The bunad is made from black or deep blue wool with wool embroidery, and the bodice is fastened with hidden hooks. At Hulda Bunader, you’ll find material kits and high-quality fabric to sew your own Signe Storstrøm bunad.
This bunad was created as part of a design competition held in 1946–48 to find a new festive costume for the Østerdal region. Although it didn’t win the contest, it was later launched under the name Alvdal bunad. The floral embroidery on the bunad was inspired by the carved decoration on a pew door from Alvdal’s old church—an artifact that now hangs inside the current Alvdal church.
The bunad is sewn from black or dark blue plain-weave wool and decorated with wool embroidery. Tall floral motifs are embroidered along the hem of the skirt and on the pocket. A narrow red trim runs along the edges of the bodice. The skirt and bodice are sewn together, and the bodice closes with hidden hooks on the inside. Some choose to add one or two visible hooks or decorative clasps.
There is no dedicated shirt design for this bunad, but the traditional Kveberg shirt is often used—a linen shirt with counted-thread embroidery. A cotton shirt with lace (nupereller) is also a suitable alternative.
You are free to choose which silver jewelry to wear with this bunad. A brooch at the collar and an additional brooch or pin on the bodice are most common. The bunad has a separate, embroidered pocket. More and more people are also choosing to add a silver belt for an elegant finishing touch.
The complete Signe Storstrøm Bunad, fully sewn, is NOK 37,500.
Additional cost may apply for waist sizes over 110 cm. The shirt, silver jewelry, and accessories are sold separately.
